A caterpillar is the larval form of a member of the Order Lepidoptera (the insect order comprising butterflies and moths). They are mostly phytophagous in food habit, with some species being entomophagous. They grow through a series of moults and each intermediate stage is called an instar. They are voracious feeders and many of them are considered as pests in agriculture. Many moth species are better known in their caterpillar stages because of the damage they cause to fruits and other agricultural produce.
